A PTCA Balloon (Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty Balloon) is a specialized catheter-based medical device used to dilate narrowed sections of coronary arteries during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is designed to help improve the internal diameter of a stenotic vessel and restore or enhance blood flow.

The device consists of a flexible catheter shaft with an inflatable balloon positioned near its distal end. The balloon is advanced over a compatible guidewire and positioned at the target lesion. When appropriately positioned, the balloon is inflated using a suitable inflation device to exert controlled radial pressure against the narrowed section of the vessel. After the required inflation, the balloon is deflated and removed.

PTCA balloons are available in a range of diameters, lengths, profiles, and designs to accommodate different coronary anatomies and procedural requirements. Radiopaque markers may be incorporated to assist with positioning under fluoroscopic imaging. The catheter shaft is designed to provide flexibility, trackability, and controlled handling during navigation.

These balloons are commonly used for lesion preparation, coronary artery dilation, and procedures involving coronary stent placement. They are generally manufactured using medical-grade materials and supplied sterile for single-use applications.

Selection of the appropriate balloon should be based on vessel characteristics, lesion dimensions, guidewire compatibility, and the specific procedural requirement. PTCA balloons should be used only by trained healthcare professionals according to the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable clinical protocols.
