Ethylene Oxide (EtO) sterilisers are specialized industrial systems utilized primarily in medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing for low-temperature sterilization. Because many heat-sensitive instruments, plastics, electronics, and single-use medical devices cannot withstand the high temperatures of steam autoclaves, EtO gas provides an effective alternative by penetrating complex packaging and product geometries to eliminate microorganisms, spores, bacteria, and viruses.

The sterilization cycle typically consists of four main phases: pre-conditioning (humidification and heating of the load), gas injection (exposure to controlled concentrations of EtO gas), evacuation (removal of the residual gas), and aeration (degassing to lower toxic EtO residues to safe, compliant levels). Due to the toxicity, flammability, and carcinogenicity of ethylene oxide, modern EtO sterilisers are engineered as highly automated, explosion-proof, and hermetically sealed containment units. They feature integrated emission abatement systems—such as catalytic or thermal oxidizers—to scrub exhaust gases and protect operators and the environment, ensuring strict compliance with international safety and health regulations.
